Castle Green at Jo Richardson Community School is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) site built in 2005 it was the first of its kind within Barking and Dagenham with the unique aim of pulling together many diverse organisations to serve the general public and our local community. Bouygues UK were commissioned to build the site and continue to maintain the building to an exceptionally high standard.
Castle Green is named after Ripple Castle which was a small mansion with a castellated front half which stood from c.1800 to 1930, Ripple Castle survived until 1938. Barking and Dagenham rapidly expanded from the 1930’s with new buildings and housing changing the landscape throughout the borough. In 2005 Castle Green Centre opened on Gale Street with a wide variety of community resources, these included a crèche and nursery, Jo Richardson Community School, sports facilities, a library, an adult college, a Post Office and Community Police. As the need for school places increased in the borough Jo Richardson Community School expanded on site as some of the tenants left and now Jo Richardson Community School, Castle Green, Bouygues, and a Nursery operate from the site.
